I LOVE receiving the Dixie texts in Mum’s handwriting. The vitality absolutely bounces off the page.
She is gloriously pre-digital, sending postcards instead of emails and picking up the phone instead of texting. I remember her saying ‘would it be better if I had a computer?’ – while packing up a handwritten correspondence between her and Ted Hughes and sending it to a museum. Erm… no I don’t think so!
The eagle-eyed among you will notice something has changed from this early draft to the finished book. A custard cream for the first person to spot it.
Did Lou Ella have a motoring hat at the start ?! I can’t remember one – it’s either custard cream for me or a giant slap for being so wrong! x

In fact it’s so unexpected it’s very tricky to see…
my Mum initially named our big hero Percy and his little sidekick Dixie, then swapped the names around. Now I cannot possibly imagine them any other way than how they are now!
