and a book launch with a difference
Let’s face it – a slight change of subject matter for Sunny Side Up, but I’d love to share this bit of news…
Ed was the leading print-journalist to bring the atrocities of the war in Bosnia to the eyes of the world, and now twenty years on he is launching a book about then and now; there’s a good interview with Ed here.
Last night’s book launch was unlike any I have been to. No tame silted conversation with glasses of tepid white wine here. We went through an unmarked wooden door, down a steep flight of stairs and into a packed, low-ceilinged room under a pub – full of noise, warmth, singing, bear-hugs and high emotions. There were plenty of Ed’s colleagues and family, but many more Bosnians: genocide survivors, who had come from near and far to express their admiration and friendship.
He’s a passionate, moral and committed force of nature and I am feeling very proud today.
What a wonderful post and you are right, a brother to be proud of…
Thank you so much Anne, I AM.
He’s one of those rare campaigning journalists who feels he has a duty to make a difference. One speaker said that he was among hundreds who survived the camps because Ed arrived and spoke out as he did: I could barely take it in, and will need to think about it for a long, long time.
what a talented family. You’re like those Attenboroughs you are.
Not The Osmonds, then? Or The Waltons? The Romanovs? I like to think of Mum and I as Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, but don’t know of any brothers…
now you’ve got me thinking!
Clara, your response to Anne’s post is so moving. The book sounds amazing. And so important.
That’s lovely of you to say so, Helen. Another interesting point I think: there are lots of people who say that journalists shouldn’t testify in court against the perpetrators, but he feels compelled to do so; his book explains why.
I can only echo what the others have said: amazing, moving and such a talented family xx
That is so kind, thank you very much. I certainly do have a fairly formidable family – I am the fluff-brained one I think! X
